Deepockets Shills Jesus As The Shizz

File under: The Siddhi of PR

In another book offering (and sure to be big payday) that's likely to piss off a lot of Xtain Fundies, Deepak Chopra is pimping Jesus as an example of "the highest level of enlightenment -- what [he] calls God-consciousness."

That's kind of a no-brainer, but like any good spiritual leader in this day and age, if you want to be truly successful, you better be able to sell sand at the beach.

We've gotta tip the turban to the 'Pockets. He's merely repackaging the same ol' - same ol' with a little New Age™ spin, and making a mint doing it. The nice thing about it is he's not trying to be God, although it may appear to some he wants as much money as God. It seems not more than a year ago he was touring with his last book, the one about the Buddha's enlightenment.

We've heard firsthand reports about him being a bit full of himself, but we can't hold that against him much, either. [Ed.note: Pot, kettle, etc.] As long as he's not miracle-mongering or making a case for his special divinity, Gp is generally ok with Dp, although that's not saying he's not just as full of shit as we are.

Ohh,it seems the Deepock effect is workin on ya jody. it is signified by the molecules of $$$$$$ radiating from the universe hype to your brain. I think in Deeppocks case the divinity is implied and basked in , kind of like Oprah, comon! you all know she is God!
Dude when you have a show and a book club i will bow down, but at this point you don't even have the proverbial stupid Tee-shirt. Go ahead bask away .

Hi Jodi - I've been reading along for a while - via Cosmic Connie - and thought I'd drop in and say hi.

It's all re-packaged, isn't it? My particularly beef is with the pernicious nonsense that is known as law of attraction. And really, when I remember how long it must have been around - the idea, I mean, it explains exactly why the phrase "if wishes were horses then beggars would ride" passed into folklore.

Great stuff. Keep it up. By the way, the day Deepak Chopra is interviewed by Richard Dawkins will be a glorious one :-)

Check out Deepockets rebuttal to Dawkins GOd delusion. Deepak is peddling the same old Creationist arguments adopting it to eastern mysticism and adding a dose of quantum mechanics:

Has Richard Dawkins become guru material yet in his own right?
What about our pop culture quantum physics guru's?

Is it Gods light at the end of the microscope?

Keep it up Jody. There is so much material. We are so rich in meaninglessness that many are making a fortune at inventing theories for the inner black hole.

I must confess I can't help but peek at it all myself, then I come to rest comfortably into the safer arms of cynicism.

Regurgitated poop is all the poopier when pooped yet again.

As for not miracle mongering... that's a moot point.

The claims made even on the jacket of his books are surely tantamount to miracle-mongering. a 5000 year old system... revived as Maharishi Ayurveda ... using the power of quantum healing to transcend disease and aging—for achieving Perfect Health.

Come on Jody, you are slacking!

In various places he appears to claim his books/system can give the reader the gift of "growing younger, achieving a blissful life, and anti-aging." ...and that's just for starters.

Where's his proof! Medical authorities have to give proof before making such miraculous claims. ;-)

Perhaps. Yet still, Deepak is no Sri Sri or Maharishi. He's not trying to be the center of attention, and while he's selling his regurg as fantastic and even miraculous, he's not saying it's miraculous because it's coming from him. He's not pimping a "new dispensation" of his own making, he's taking well-travelled pathways and sprucing them up as he sees fit to make a living. You and I may not see them quite as fit, but it's still a long ways from Sri Sri claiming to be divinely inspired to produce some lame breathing exercise that's supposedly the spiritual equivalent to sliced bread.

Thanks, RT. Keep reading and tell all your friends.

Anonymous - yes, I'm a member at the Dawkins forum. Anyone who thinks Richard D has guru status or seeks it is kidding themselves big time. Read the God Delusion. Guru-status is the last thing Richard would want - it's the very thing he's opposed to. Rather like this blog, if I might hazard a guess :-)

And I still say: the face to face interview will be quite something.

This kind of stuff is bad science , bad psychology, erroneous and completely irrelevant to spiritual life. it's just an aping and recreation of the empty consumer society that it portends to provide relief from and it just makes yo plain crazy. What if you don't get bliss life , young looks, all these impermanent things? have you failed in some way? He is exploiting this teaching for his own reasons, i guess because he can, but i think it sets up harmful , money and time wasting expectations , kind of just the opposite of what the original intention was, which is to help people to see through this kind of shit, and be happy anyway. Still if you claim your own caca i can't fault you, but you have not reached Deepy levels yet.

Good guess, RT. Although perhaps unlike Dawkins, I'm still a believer in the condition known as self-realization as it is defined by Vedanta and Shankara's commentaries.

Also, while I can agree that the idea of an absolute, personalized ruler of the universe for us all is a delusion, the idea of being in relationship to an ultimate spiritual being can still be very helpful on an individual basis.

Just don't expect me to abide by your God, and it's all good.

Not all of it. As lame and corny as it all may seem, 'Pockets is giving folks a wide variety of placebo choices. Regardless of what you think of them, they can work for whoever applies their belief to them.

It's no different than Sri Sri's kriya or the Maharishi's TM™, both of which are just as effective as anything else folks decide to do to get spiritual. All spiritual experience is a placebo effect. Chopra is providing a variety of sugar pills with his personal flavorings. I'm not at all convinced they are any less efficacious than anything else out there, including the source materials 'Pockets is stealing from.

i can't remember my vande gurunam prayer to well , but in that song the doctor uses a sharp needle to extract the ignorance, it ain't no placebo effect.

As described in the song. I chalk that up to visual metaphor.
