The Rev. Sun-Yung Cohen?

File under: Gurubusting

We love it when a tipster does all the work for us:
Details will apparently be forthcoming, but this current student's blog reveals that the Rev. Sun-Yung [Andrew] Cohen has orchestrated and officiated at a group marriage ceremony for four couples this New Year's Eve. What isn't [revealed] in the meaning "relationship in an evolutionary context" is that in the past Cohen has always had final approval of who gets to have a sexual relationship with whom, and often pairs people up himself.

The other irony to all this is that Cohen used to have quite a penchant for breaking up married couples who became formal students. This was the case for years... now he's marrying them... I guess either way, it's all about who's controlling the marriage... and when it comes to his students it's got to be him.

[It] also could be interesting to remind everyone that this is all happening at Foxhollow, the ashram he bilked $2 million from Jane O'Neil to acquire.
Cohen's own mother explains it all, speaking to Cohen himself:
Everyone lives in terror. Of you. The people nearest you are all spies. For you. They're also sycophants, telling you only what you want to hear, because they're afraid to tell you the truth. So you get no feedback. There is nothing at all to modify your behavior. Nothing.
Playing with people's lives like he owns them. It's much more within the purview of character disorder than anything that could be called true wisdom.

It seems they got it wrong. According to one of the actual groom's blog, there were to be six couples married by Cohen on New Year's eve, not four. Even more wacky!
Do you think they all shared the same bridal suite at the ashram? :)

I used to like Cohen's writing, and I still like his magazine. Like many other people in this business whose public persona is different from their private, he is (or was) an inspiring writer, and I'm sure at one time his satsangs were probably good.

But clearly he's become a monster, a psychic vampire of the grossest, most malignant kind. Him and that fat slug Adi Da make a fine matching pair.

I believe it's what the Tibetans call "vajra hell". One gets a good, solid glimpse, but when one loses it, instead of simply admitting one has lost it, one pretends one still has it, because one can't bear losing the adulation one's charisma (when one had it) attracted to one.

To anybody who has had a Glimpse, and who "bears witness", this kind of behaviour is utterly repulsive because it queers the pitch for genuine teachers.

If this Co-rooster guy tells his disciples when and who they have sex with, at least they get to have sex sometimes... They probably weren't getting it before at all.

Actually, it sums up everyone, qualified guru or otherwise.

As soon as the lips move to express the Truth, it turns to shit.

You can see that in Cohen's new blog. He waxes lyrical about how The Self loves to see The Self, and commentators reflect back to him how the revolution that Cohen started is really, really, really happening.

So on goes the Andrew Cohen show, created by interpretations of experience... not by naked experiencing.

BTW, his disciples often mention "the compulsion to evolve" - I think this is a corruption caused by the infiltration of the superego, which always pushes for perfection.

What a complete load of crap. It's pretty much null as a nonduality teaching but great marketing because it keeps the ninnies who follow Cohen coming back for more.

I think there is clear evidence that Betty is more attracted to you, Blade, than she is to me. Maybe we can get Betty into Cohen's dating service. He could marry her off to his disciples as a form of punishment. Might be better than going into an ice cold lake, but who knows?

The problem Chuck, is that someone who likes to be bitten will set things up

Yea, Blade, sometimes a dip into an icy mountain lake is just what a guy needs. In that case there is hope for Betty to find her soul mate!

Betty's silence on this issue must mean she's in Mongolia!

Chuck and Blade,

You two will never need a real woman as long as you have the palms of your hands.

Saying this about me, Blade says you also like to get bitten. Have a nice day.

This blog stays at its best when we focus our collective wit and wisdom on the responsible use vs irresponsible abuse of power by leaders and followers--and when people have been able to describe what they've seen during their explorations on the spiritual circuit.

Its off topic when comments are made that someone is umarriageable. Guruphiliac is not a dating service.

That's a whole other topic, best assessed in person, not cyberspace.

I'm not sure I like being of the same opinion as you, Blade. Don't make a habit of being so sharp.

By the way, it was Cohen's marriage and dating service this thread IS about. If he gets one why can't Jody? I assume that Jody needs to get laid almost as much as Cohen himself does.

Actually, I've never needed to get laid. That's not to say I wouldn't mind, provided the partner was pleasing to my eye and tolerable to listen to for the duration of the act.

As Chuck has observed a number of times, I'm pretty much unmarriable, and I now lack the patience to put up with any shit anymore in the interests of my sex life... although there was a time I put up with plenty of shit in order to get laid.

Actually Blade, you tried the same thing at first. If you weren't such a brillant bastard who wanted to see his words in print and have have an army of drooling peasants sitting at your feet waiting for the next drop of wisdom, you might have fled this blog yourself with your tail between your doggy legs!

That means we all already have the truth so there's no need to criticise gurus because the disciples have the truth.

But I presume you do it strictly for fun, in the same way disciples play disciple strictly for fun.

No, it means we've never been anything else but the truth.

so there's no need to criticise gurus because the disciples have the truth.

If gurus say they can give something that folks already have, there is a good reason right there to call them on it.

But I presume you do it strictly for fun, in the same way disciples play disciple strictly for fun.

I am in it for the fun. But many devotees are in it to escape self-loathing. In other words, not for fun, but for something they'd be much better off seeing a psychiatrist for rather than a guru.

But that doesn't stop the gurus, Cohen in particular, from deciding to play God with their devotees lives, for which they deserve a good flogging whenever possible.

Betty, that's a really lovely compliment. I could do without the drooling peasants, but the rest of it is just too kind.

It was meant to be too kind, you fool! That was the apology I promised you.

So they simply give seekers the info that they are the truth? But isn't that a gain?

"...many devotees are in it to escape self-loathing. In other words, not for fun, but for something they'd be much better off seeing a psychiatrist for rather than a guru."

Probably half the people in the world could do with a psychiatrist... including gurus.

"But that doesn't stop the gurus, Cohen in particular, from deciding to play God with their devotees lives, for which they deserve a good flogging whenever possible."

Maybe gurus need to be pointed to the psychiatrist themselves.

Gurus do a lot of different things for a lot of different people. Mine disabused me of erroneous notions about myself and the world. Many provide accessory parenting by way of their status as space-daddies and -mommies.

I may be heading away from your marrying topic but here's my say about the Androids as I have named Andrew's slaves. I was with Papaji and remember the time when he said that Andrew will go to "Avachi HEll" . Which is the lowest hell . And also he spent time telling a story of a man who spoke against Buddha and argued against the teachings. In this story the man later on regrets what he has said and becomes remorseful . As a penance he buries himself up to the neck in saw dust and has the saw dust lit . This way he burns very slowly and suffers excruciatingly. So already Papaji had said it about Andrew , and look at the mess . If Papaji's Vach Siddhi was at work we are seeing the results of Andrew in the hell realms.

Papaji will be right there in hell with him!

Mr Anon ,
hahaa!!What makes you think he's in hell ? Papajis's not here to answer you if he is .Maybe he's being a good Bodhisattva , is'nt that what they do ? Freeing Androids from the hell realms. But I don't think he's doing that either. unfortunately Andrew is still here for us all to see rolling in it . Even this silly Cohen is an aspect of ourselves too. Yet it is still the case ,as UG would put it, he's a 'Bastard !' too.
